Alex and I grudgingly rolled out of bed at around 6:30 am on Saturday. We slowly got ready to head out...desite our excitement, we were moving as if anchors were attatched to our legs. Well, it was 6:30 on a Saturday, afterall!
We arrived at the Radiology dept right around 6:50. A lady told us that someone would be out to help us shortly. Thirty minutes later a nurse pokes her head out and asks "have you two been helped?" We tell her that we had an appointment at 7, that we'd been waiting in the office since 6:50 and someone told us someone would be out to help us soon.
So, the nurse takes down our info, gives us a voucher for parking and tells us the ultrasound tech would come and get us soon. Around 7:30, we were called back. The ultrasound tech let me know that a transvaginal ultrasound was ordered since it was so early. I expected that since, generally nothing can be seen on an abdominal ultrasound. She informed me that I needed to remove pants and undies then cover myself with a sheet.
She came in (after I was situated) with student and asked if it was OK for her to observed. "Of course" was our response. Then, the tech took out the probe and allowed me to guide it inside. She turned on the ultrasound machine and she pointed out my cervix. She said it looked good. She started moving the probe around a bit and informed the student that my uterus is tipped backwards! She explained that she had to move the probe around in the opposite direction because of that reason. She told me that it was no big deal.
She continued with the probing; looking at my ovaries and whatever else is in there. Then, finally, got to the baby. It was about the size of a half dollar (it's not that big in real life). She pointed out the gestational sac, the yolk sac and the baby. She took some measurements and let us know that the baby was measuring 6w3d. I was very happy that it was right on par with my last menstrual period (LMP)! Next, the tech pointed out the baby's heart beat :) It was an unmistakeable flicker on the screen. Then she turned the sound on. Alex and I were so excited! It was a nice and strong, but some of the ladies from my private FB groups let me know that it was still really early and possible that we were hearing my own heartbeat. This would totally make sense as usually the heartbeat isn't heard until 10-12 weeks!
We're (but probably more so me) feeling so relieved that everything is going well so far! We're still being cautiously optimistic (Alex coined that term) because it's so early. We're hoping that this bambino makes it. We feel so close to him/her, especially after the ultrasound. It would be absolutely devastating if something bad were to happen. But like I said "cautiously optimistic."
We have an 8w appt set up for Wednesday, Feb 15, 2012. This appt will mostly involve lots of talking, which is great because I have a ton of questions!
Until Next Time,
Tosha
